A Meta-analysis on the Relationship between Social Exclusion and Depression in the Elderly in Korea
Lee Eun-Seok
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to present the effects of social exclusion on depression in the elderly as quantitative and integrated results. The purpose is achieved by performing a meta-analysis and systematically collecting various studies published in Korea on social exclusion of the elderly. No start date of publication for a literature search was set. The search was conducted in five databases targeting academic and dissertations published up to 2022. The PRISMA flowchart was used to narrow down the total number of articles searched to 161. Among the 161 articles, 12 studies were chosen. These 12 studies had utilized PEOS as criteria for subject selection and exclusion and had conducted correlation analysis on the effects of variables on the relationship between social exclusion and depression in the elderly. 63 effect size data were taken from the 12 studies for the mete-analysis. Meta-analysis was done using the R program¡¯s ¡®meta¡¯ package. The average effect size was r=.26, which was close to the median effect size. Among the nine sub-variables of social exclusion, neighborhood exclusion (r=.35), basic service exclusion (r=.33), and cultural exclusion (r=.32) were found to have the median effect sizes affecting depression in the elderly. Publication error was apparent but not to the extent of affecting the results. The effect size was r=.16 (95% CI: .12¡.19), which was still statistically significant. This study is significant in that it has provided basic data for policy direction and program development to overcome social exclusion and reduce depression in the elderly.
